December 5–8, 2019

Trip is FULL. Please register for the wait list here.
Experience the spectacle of flocks of tens of thousands wintering geese, ducks, and cranes on this four-day trip to New Mexico. World-famous Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1939 to provide a critical stopover for migrating waterfowl to rest and refuel as they follow the Rio Grande on their migration. Large numbers of raptors and sparrows add to the incredible array of wintering bird species found here each yearWe can expect to find over 20 species of waterfowl and numerous raptors looking to take advantage of the abundant prey, including Ferruginous Hawks, Golden and Bald Eagles, Prairie Falcons and Merlins. A visit to a roost at dusk will provide a chance to watch the amazing sight of Sandhill Cranes spiraling in by the hundreds to spend the night roosting in the shallow wetlands.

We’ll also explore extensive stands of cottonwood riparian forest around the refuge and areas of Chihuahuan Desert scrub. These habitats will be good spots to look for Scaled Quail, Red-naped Sapsucker, Loggerhead Shrike, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay, Juniper Titmouse, all three bluebirds, Townsend’s Solitaire, and a diversity of sparrows, including Swamp, Black-throated, Sagebrush, and White-throated. Join us on an unforgettable adventure to the Land of Enchantment.
