Tucson Audubon Activities and the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Tucson Audubon’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds Will be Closed Until Further Notice

Because our facility draws visitors from around the country and abroad, as well as those in vulnerable populations, we feel the most responsible action to take at this moment is to officially close the grounds until further notice.

UPDATE: All Field Trips, Classes, and Lectures Have Been Canceled Through May 4

In the interest of our community’s health, Tucson Audubon is canceling all of our gatherings through the end of March. Read below for details regarding individual events.

  • The previously scheduled Birds & Community Lecture for March 19: Hummingbirds: Tiny Messengers of Change is canceled. As this is also serving as our annual meeting, voting for a new slate of Board members will be transitioned to an online platform. Updates on voting for the Board of Directors will follow.
  • Our upcoming Habitat at Home Workshop Series at the Santa Rita Springs Green Valley Recreation Center is postponed and will be rescheduled. Please follow our Facebook page and watch our website for details of the new dates.
  • All field trips, including the weekly Sweetwater Wetlands Walks that occur on Wednesdays, are canceled through May 4, after which the schedule will be reevaluated.
  • All e-Bird classes scheduled to be held at the Tucson Audubon Mason Center are canceled.

Both Tucson Audubon Nature Shops will be closed until further notice.

Our Online Shop will continue to fulfill orders in the meantime. If you would like to set up an appointment to purchase optics/seed, please email us at natureshop@tucsonaudubon.org or call 520-209-1815 to set up an appointment.

Published March 12, 2020

Public Health — As of Wednesday, March 11, officials have confirmed a single presumptive positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in a returning traveler residing in unincorporated Pima County. Our thoughts are with Southeast Arizona individuals, families, and travelers who are being affected by the pandemic. In light of recent developments, Tucson Audubon is taking a series of precautionary measures to protect the most vulnerable members of our community, while still allowing those who choose to do so to continue to enjoy our many bird- and nature-centric programs. We would like to encourage everyone to remain calm throughout this time and to stay abreast of the latest recommendations from health officials. (Resources are listed at the end of this document.)

Out of an abundance of caution, we are announcing the following modifications to our upcoming activities. Contact information for the relevant staff are listed below each activity, if you have further questions or concerns.

FOR ALL ACTIVITIES

  • Please stay home if you are not feeling well.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or tissue and wash your hands immediately afterward.
  • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and water. If no soap is available, use a hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol content.
  • Avoid touching your face with unclean hands.
  • Disinfect optics and camera equipment, especially if using on-loan equipment.

MODIFIED ACTIVITIES

Classes

  • We will relax our cancellation and refund policy during this time to accommodate last-minute cancellations and will issue full refunds. Please do not attend a class if you are showing symptoms or have been in close contact with a known case of coronavirus (COVID-19).
  • Contact: Diana Rosenblum, Membership Coordinator | drosenblum@tucsonaudubon.org

Field Trips

Quail Café – Mason Center Donor Brunch

  • In collaboration with our sponsoring partner, Splendido, we will be postponing our March 21 Quail Café donor brunch at the Mason Center.
  • We hope to provide an additional opportunity to gather and engage with donors.
  • Contact: Keith Ashley, Development Director | kashley@tucsonaudubon.org

International Trips

Tucson Audubon is currently evaluating the implications of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak on our upcoming international trips to Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, and South Africa. We will update our website and be in touch with registered participants as we learn more about how these activities may or may not be impacted. Registered participants with specific concerns can contact their pre-designated staff person.

Southeast Arizona Birding Festival

UPDATE: Registration for the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival is postponed until at least May 4, 2020. Please remain connected to the festival website and Facebook page for announcements about changes to the festival program. www.tucsonaudubon.org/festival

Again, we encourage everyone to keep informed of developments, as this situation is rapidly evolving. Tucson Audubon will continue to follow and adhere to recommendations issued by the CDC and/or the county health departments of Pima, Santa Cruz, and Cochise Counties. Any changes to our programs and activities will be posted on our website, www.tucsonaudubon.org. General inquiries can be made to the Tucson Audubon Nature Shop, Monday – Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., at (520) 629-0510 or info@tucsonaudubon.org.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Lutz, Executive Director
Mary Walker, Board President
