FREE Community Nature Expo

Join the festivities at the Community Nature Expo! Featuring fun, games, free talks and vendors all held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Tucson – Reid Park. See map for directions.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7

  • Evening Events
    • Opening Reception, 5–6 pm
      Free with festival registration. Kick-off the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival right by starting our bird list, hearing from the festival coordinator and featured speakers, and picking up your gift bag. Meet guides, exhibitors, speakers, volunteers, and fellow festival participants while enjoying light appetizers and a cash bar. Sign-up through online registration, limited to first 100.
    • Sky Islands Important Bird Area Dedication at Rincon Mountain District, Saguaro NP, 6:30–9 pm
      Free registration here. Celebrate the dedication of the relatively new Tucson Sky Islands IBA which is made up of the forest land in the Santa Catalinas plus Saguaro National Park RMD. Enjoy a short evening ceremony, a few words from key folks from Saguaro NP and the Coronado National Forest, eat some cake and refreshments and then an optional evening Herp and Night Creatures walk on the pavement and trails. Limited parking and 50 participants.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 8

    • Birds & Brews at Borderlands Brewery sponsored by Beaumont/Port Arthur Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Sabrewing Nature Tours, 5:30–7 pm
      Free with festival registration. Spend an evening at the local brewery and enjoy a free meal from the food truck, courtesy of Beaumont & Port Arthur Convention and Visitors Bureau. Share your stories from recent bird trips and learn about new places to explore while drinking and eating–what could be better? Sabrewing Nature Tours will host a “Pre-Brew” field trip at Reid Park near the festival venue (4pm – 5pm) before migrating to Borderlands Brewery. “Pre-Brew” field trip information will be sent separately one week prior to event. Don’t miss the FREE opportunity to bird and hang out with these professional tour leaders. Sign-up through online registration, limited to first 75.
    • Family Nature Night at Historic Canoa Ranch sponsored by Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation, 6pm – 9pm
      Join us for an evening outside uncovering the mysteries of nighttime nature through hands-on and discovery-base activities. Soak it all in with good food and a view of Pima County’s Historic Canoa Lake. Learn about animal adaptations to the dark, play nature games and make and take crafts. Activities include: Bats!, Bird Beaks & Food, Animal Eyeshine Kit, Bugs!, Owl Pellet Dissection, and crafts. Bring a headlamp or flashlight and dress appropriately for the weather. Presented by Pima County and Tucson Audubon Society.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10

  • In the “Kid’s Zone” at the Nature Expo:
    • Reid Park Zoo with Animals! (10am – 12pm)
    • Live and Local Birds with Northwest Tucson Wildlife Rehabiliation (12pm – 2pm)
    • Face Painting with Glitter Girl AZ (10am – 2pm)
    • Owl Pellet Dissection, Bird Bingo, Build Your Own Binoculars, & Interactive Bird Kits (10am – 2pm)
    • Receive a Neighborhood Field Guide
    • Meet Poncho, the Vermilion Flycatcher, and Sunny the Saguaro courtesy of Western National Parks Association and Saguaro NP
    • Free Bird Walks around the venue where we might see hummingbirds and nesting birds
  • In the Nature Expo:

    • Youth Birding Outing at Sweetwater Wetlands presented by Carl Zeiss Sports Optics (7am – 9:30am)
      Get ready for a fun and easy walk through Tucson’s favorite wetlands to see exciting species like Green Heron hiding in the reeds and Tropical Kingbirds in the willows. Birders ages 6 – 17 and of all experience levels are welcome to participate in an expert-led trip! Binoculars will be available to use, courtesy of Zeiss Sports Optics.
