CONSERVATION FOCUS

The Sonoita Creek Watershed

For our 10th annual Southeast Arizona Birding Festival we are introducing a new component of the festival: an intentional focus on a critical area of conservation in Southeast Arizona. This year we have chosen the Sonoita Creek Watershed which originates in the Patagonia Mountains and flows down through Patagonia into the Santa Cruz River and has suffered habitat degradation due to a history of mining activity, cattle ranching, and poor land use. The Sonoita Creek Watershed, as all parts of the Sky Island region, hosts an amazing abundance of biodiversity, critical habitats and feeds many important areas for conservation including our own Paton Center for Hummingbirds in Patagonia.

Our goals include:

  • Raise awareness and educate birders on the importance of restoring habitat
  • Create connections between the birder and the place through on-site field trips
  • Raising funds through the festival specifically for conservation work along Sonoita Creek

“Birding with a Purpose” field trips every day of the festival (see field trip page for full descriptions):

  • Thursday, Aug 6: Montezuma Quail Habitat Restoration with Borderlands Restoration
  • Friday, Aug 6: Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve with Friends of Sonoita Creek
  • Friday, Aug 6: Patagonia Lake SP Boat & Bird with Sonoita Creek Watershed Specialist, Howard Buchanan
  • Saturday, Aug 7: Cuckoo Corridor with the Tucson Audubon Restoration Crew
  • Sunday, Aug 8: Harshaw Mining with Keith Kamper and Carolyn Shafer

50% of your “Birding with a Purpose” field trip cost will go directly to conservation work in the Sonoita Creek Watershed.

Free conservation presentations every day of the festival (see the events page for full descriptions):

  • Thursday, Aug 6: “Spring Sand Riparian Areas” with Thomas Meixner, University of Arizona Professor and Department Head, Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences
  • Friday, Aug 7: “Economic Impact of Arizona’s Rivers, Lakes, and Streams” with Haley Paul, Policy Manager for Audubon Arizona
  • Saturday, Aug 8: “Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act” with Borderlands Restoration
  • Saturday, Aug 8: “Be a Positive Agent of Change” with Nicole Gillett, Tucson Audubon Conservation Advocate
  • Sunday, Aug 9: “Native Frog Conservation” with Audrey Owens, Arizona Game & Fish

Thank you for your participation with us in taking care of our precious natural resources and wildlife.
