Our goal is to conserve birds, other wildlife and the places they use in southeasterrn Arizona.
See the Educational Events brochure for all of the 2010 offerings.
Goals
- Increase southern Arizona citizens' environmental literacy and appreciation of our southwestern natural environment by promoting the understanding of ecological concepts and conservation priorities.
- Bring about changes in people's behavior that lead to a commitment of sustainable resource use in our neighborhoods and throughout our community.
- Provide ways for people to contribute to bird conservation (including, though not limited to, habitat restoration, surveys and advocacy) thus integrating Tucson Audubon's work in education, conservation and recreation.
Key Concepts - Our Education Program has four interconnected key concepts.
Birding skills and wildlife awareness - Develop skills in identifying birds by sight and sound; the hows, whys and wheres of birding. Have an understanding and appreciation of the habitats required for healthy bird populations, which leads to the enjoyment of watching birds and a desire to protect those habitats.
Understanding the workings of the natural world - Understand basic ecological principles and how they apply to unique local bioregions.
Promoting natural resource conservation - Develop a values structure (conservation ethic) that includes personal and collective responsibility and to pass on natural resources in the same or better condition as we found them.
Advocacy - Know how to contact elected officials and be motivated to do so. Understand the power of non-profit agencies and form a social contract with them to effect change.
