Tucson Audubon Reopening Plans

Public Programs

While we’re not quite ready to resume our regular slate of field trips, we will be resuming our weekly staff-led Wednesday morning walks at Sweetwater Wetlands Park–with special safety measures–beginning June 3. Maximum group sizes will be 10 birders, including our leader, and we’ll request that participants wear face coverings and observe safe distancing. Sign up for a Sweetwater walk.

Classes, workshops, and socials will continue to be held using the Zoom platform until we feel we can safely facilitate gathering for these activities in person. For a full schedule of Zoom engagements, click here.

While the 10th Annual Southeast Arizona Birding Festival has been postponed until 2021, August 11–15, we are happy to continue offering many workshops from our festival partners virtually throughout the summer. Stay tuned for more festival updates!

Property: Paton Center for Hummingbirds Closed Until Further Notice

Tucson Audubon staff are continuing to monitor coronavirus conditions in Patagonia and Santa Cruz County. Likewise, we continue to stay in close communication with local non-profit partners and Town of Patagonia leaders in order to stay abreast of how the pandemic is affecting the community.

Patagonia is a small, rural community with limited health services, and Tucson Audubon is endeavoring to keep area residents, volunteers, and staff as safe as possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for those making travel plans or simply eager to reconnect with birds in the Patons’ world-famous backyard. Please stay tuned to the Paton Center’s Facebook Page for updates and visit the Paton Center’s live-streaming webcams to enjoy the action at the feeders.

If you have questions, please email paton@tucsonaudubon.org.

Property: Mason Center Trails Are Open

We know that going outside to enjoy the birds and habitats we all love is important during these uncertain times. To facilitate the enjoyment of species like Gambel’s Quail, Ash-throated Flycatchers, and desert-dwelling Purple Martins, we’ll be reopening the trails at Tucson Audubon’s Mason Center on June 1. Please note that the buildings and the restrooms will be closed to public use until further notice, and onsite staff will be observing safety protocols  including distancing and wearing of face coverings.

Nature Shop at the Historic Y Is Open With Limited Hours

While we’re already engaged in some limited call-ahead/curbside service, our Historic Y Nature Shop location will have a firm reopening to the public on Thursday, June 4. This location will only be open Thursday through Saturday (10:00 am to 4:00 pm Thursday and Friday; 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Saturday) until the end of July. We’re still developing our strategy for limiting the number of customers in the shop at a time, and we’ll request that patrons wear face coverings to protect our staff and volunteers.

The Nature Shop located at Agua Caliente Park is now PERMANENTLY CLOSED.

Our expanded Online Shop will continue to fulfill orders.
