Removing fence lines to restore wildlife connectivity and capping open pipes to prevent small animal entrapment.
This opportunity is in partnership with the Desert Fence Busters collaborative
We will meet at 7:30am and will work until 4pm; but we welcome folks to join us in the morning and work for whatever duration you’re able. We will break for lunch where snacks will be provided and an informal discussion of wildlife connectivity & the Avra Valley will be led by organizers.
We’ll be working on removing stretches of fence that are no longer required on City of Tucson Water Department near Ironwood National Monument. This is important work to remove barriers to wildlife movement through the Avra Valley and between the surrounding mountains. You will be helping accomplish a positive and lasting improvement to the landscape and directly help wildlife by increasing connectivity between protected open spaces!
PLEASE BRING: Coffee mug (coffee will be provided), WATER (in a refillable bottle), lunch, and any personal necessities. Long pants and closed-toed shoes are required. Folks wearing shorts and/or open-toed shoes will not be able to participate due to the nature of the work and the landscape. We highly recommend comfortable, but sturdy boots, as well as older denim or similar pants and long-sleeve shirts that will provide protection from barbed wire spurs – there is a good chance these could get torn in working with the wire. We also highly recommend a sunhat, sun/safety glasses, and sunscreen or other measures to avoid sunburn. If you have work gloves, bring them, but we will provide for those that do not.
FYI: Final event details (including directions) will be sent out to registered participants as each event day approaches.
WE WILL PROVIDE: Tools, snacks, coffee (for refilling your personal coffee mugs), water (for refilling your personal water bottle), and more snacks, but NOT a full lunch.
Our policy is that all attendees must pre-register by responding to this opportunity via this AZGFD Volunteer portal. To ensure efficient and effective management of limited time and resources, we may need to enforce this policy. We may turn away folks that are not registered in order to protect our ability to conduct subsequent events. We hope you’ll understand our limitations and help us to facilitate an efficient and effective opportunity for community involvement in wildlife conservation.
