Protect Birds & Their Habitats
Birding
This event is being hosted by the Desert Fence Busters collaborative that includes the following partner organizations: Arizona Game and Fish Department, Arizona Wildlife Federation, BKW Farms, Bureau of Reclamation, City of Tucson, Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection, Friends of Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Friends of Ironwood Forest, Pima County, Saguaro National Park, and Tucson Audubon Society. The collaborative members share a common goal of improving landscape connectivity to benefit wildlife.
While others will be working on removing obsolete stretches of fence, this crew will be working to cap fence posts that can lead to substantial wildlife mortalities. You will be helping accomplish a positive and lasting improvement to the landscape and directly remove a significant source of wildlife mortality from the landscape!
Coffee mug (coffee will be provided), water (in a refillable bottle), lunch, and any personal necessities. Long pants and closed-toed shoes are required. Folks wearing shorts and/or open-toed shoes will not be able to participate due to the nature of the work and the landscape. We highly recommend comfortable, but sturdy boots, as well as older denim or similar pants and long-sleeve shirts that will provide protection from barbed wire spurs – there is a good chance these could get torn in working with the wire. We also highly recommend a sunhat, sun/safety glasses, and sunscreen or other measures to avoid sunburn. If you have work gloves, bring them, but we will provide for those that do not.
In general, we will meet at 7:30am and will work until 4pm; but we welcome folks to join us in the morning and work for whatever duration you’re able. We will break for lunch where snacks will be provided and an informal discussion of wildlife connectivity through Pima County will be led by organizers. Pease join us for fence-capping efforts in Pima County on any or all of the following days:
Open
The various efforts will take place on lands managed by the City of Tucson, Pima County, and the National Park Service. Most of the events will occur in Avra Valley (west of the Tucson Mountains), but some may occur in other locations through Pima County.
