Empire Ranch Banding Station Tour and Bird Walk with Aya Pickett

Empire Ranch Banding Station Tour and Bird Walk

When: July 25th, from 7AM – 10AM

Where: Empire Ranch, Sonoita AZ (1 hour drive from central Tucson)

What: See birds up close and personal as Aya Pickett (Restoration Project Manager, TAS) and Adam Hannuksela (Science Coordinator, Sonoran Joint Venture) conduct a banding session, learn about the science and process of bird banding, and how it contributes super valuable data and deepens our understanding of migration and breeding patterns.

In between banding, there will be an easy, casual bird “sit” lead by Donito Burgess (Community Engagement Manager, TAS) at the banding station adjacent to the parking area. This location is a delightful birding spot with great species diversity – and you might just spot some pronghorn on the way!

Note, only experienced banders will actually be handling the birds, but you will have the opportunity to join them as they gather birds from the mist nets, record data, put a ring on it, and release them. It is such a cool learning experience.

Accessibility notes: While the gravel/dirt parking area and banding station are relatively flat (but sunny/exposed!), if you wish to join banders on their way to the mist nets, it will require walking over uneven terrain involving crossing a waterway – there is a risk of wet feet! You may wish to bring hiking poles or a walking stick to help with your balance as you cross – nothing treacherous, but best to use caution. Rain boots might come in handy! All registrants have the option of remaining at the banding station if that better suits your needs, wishes, abilities.

What to bring: A folding chair if you have one, sun hat or umbrella for shade, water, and sunscreen. Hiking poles, muck/rain boots, walking sticks optional.

Limited to 15 participants
