Madera Canyon with Scott Crabtree and Donito Burgess

Registration for this trip is free. Registration opens October 14, 7am.

Trip Difficulty: Moderate. Moderately difficult walk over a worn but rocky trail, covering about three miles round trip with the turn-around at the Picnic grounds. Some areas require climbing over rocks or possibly crossing the stream on rocks. Bathrooms available at both ends of the trail. No drinking water available.

Join Scott Crabtree and Donito Burgess for a birding field trip in Madera Canyon. Starting at the Proctor Road parking area, we’ll take our time birding the lower area of the canyon, keeping an eye out for Red–naped Sapsuckers, Hammond’s Flycatchers, Mexican Jays and Green-tailed Towhees. We’ll then drive up to the Madera Picnic Area where we’ll look for the typical Sky Island specialties and any late migrants or wintering birds. We’ll wrap up by visiting the feeders at the Santa Rita Lodge.

Bring your optics of choice, appropriate footwear, and food and water. Final trip plans will be emailed to participants. Madera Canyon has a daily use fee of $8 per car or you must have a valid Coronado National Forest Annual Pass or Interagency (America the Beautiful) Pass, including the Annual, Senior, Access, or Military Pass, displayed on the driver’s side of the vehicle dashboard. Limited to 8 people.
