Springtime on Mt. Lemmon – Middle Bear Canyon with Scott Crabtree
Springtime on Mt. Lemmon – Middle Bear Canyon with Scott Crabtree
Registration fee: $35/member, $50/non-member
Trip difficulty is moderate as we’ll hike some mountainous trails, walk cross-country through woods & washes on rocky, uneven & soft terrain. Two miles or less. Pit toilets available.
It’s spring, and it’s time to experience the beginning of breeding season for the local species and returning neotropical migrants. We’ll start about 10 miles up the Mt Lemmon Hwy as the habitat transitions from desert scrub and juniper woodlands into cypress and pine/oak forest as you turn into Bear Canyon. We will explore Chihuahua Pines, Cypress & Middle Bear Picnic Areas, hike to General Hitchcock Campground, and perhaps beyond. We’ll be searching for hummingbirds, woodpeckers, flycatchers, jays, and especially returning warblers. It’s a good time to tune up those birding ears!
There is an $8 Day Use fee per vehicle which can be purchased on site; Interagency Passes are accepted. Final meet-up instructions and homework (!) will be emailed to participants prior to the trip.
