Catching Up on Flycatchers with Gary Bachman

Madera Canyon – Sylvester Springs

August 3rd, 6:30 AM-10:30 AM

Trip Difficulty: 4 miles walking part on unpaved road, and on a steep jeep trail. Elevation gain is from 5000 to 6000ft. The route we will take follows Madera Canyon road, to the dirt road past Kent Spring House meeting Kent Spring Trail which we will follow for the next mile to Sylvester Spring.

We will meander on the Kent Spring trail to Sylvester spring, mostly following a densely forested drainage with running water, This route does not get much attention, but has many of the birds seen elsewhere in Madera Canyon, including flycatchers and vireos, which we hope to spend some time studying. Most of the walk is in shaded/dense sycamore/oak woodland. In addition to flycatchers we are likely to find red faced warblers, painted redstarts and lots of flowering Columbines.

Meet at Amphitheater Parking lot – a fee or park pass is required.. A Restroom is available in the parking lot. Bring water and snacks. Wear good hiking clothes and sturdy boots
